So happy to have four poems of mine, "Composure," "The Escapement," "Man Alive," and "Devyatyy Val (The Ninth Wave)" appearing in the 2025 issue of Gavialidae. Thanks so much to the editors of this new magazine. Here's a look at the first one, "Composure":

Happy to share that my manuscript, DEVERA, is a finalist for prizes at two more small presses.

One of them is the wonderful Burnside Review Press—more information on the results here (the relevant info is under 4/30/21).

DEVERA also made it to the finals for two prizes that Fordham University’s Poetic Justice Institute offers annually, the POL Prize and the POL Editor’s Prize.  For more information about the Poetic Justice Institute or how to enter your manuscript, start here.

I’m grateful to the editors and readers at these presses!

Jotted Notes: Yeats and Frost

5/9/2021

If we detect in Yeats a disillusionment and frustration, reflecting perhaps some biographical let-downs—like the difficulty starting an Irish national theater or the need to cast off the “coat” of inward wandering that exemplified his early mythic phase—it seems this tone of dejection is a tonic for the poems, giving them an emotional edge, and thus an accessibility. Yeats is struggling, even bitter at times—as a reader, I am a friend to it.

Whereas in Frost there is a comfort to the bones in the regularity and utility of the themes. As a reader, I am amenable to it—but at the same time these themes somehow free up a deep emotionalism that I don’t expect, and find almost overwhelming, perhaps in part because of a surging confidence behind the poems.

Both however, can confound—Yeats with language (like Stevens), Frost with concept.
